Walls Create Outdoor Living Space

Objectives

Homeowners wanted to transform their sloping backyard into a more usable outdoor living space but were unsure how to approach the project themselves. While meeting with the design team, the family discussed designating separate spaces in the backyard for grilling, a fire pit, and a pergola-covered lounge area.

Solutions

The landscaping firm suggested that combining various hardscape products could help define dedicated areas within the space. The family’s primary goal was to use space behind the garage, which was also on a hill. The landscaping crew excavated the hill behind the garage to create a level area. Standard segmental retaining wall (SRW) units in Bronze Blend held back the rest of the hill behind the garage and transitioned the space. The installation crew repurposed the SRW units to create free-standing walls and columns to define each space in the yard and support the pergola.

Results

Community members and guests enjoy the bridge daily, whether driving out of the property or walking under the bridge to admire the pond. The project earned the prestigious National Concrete Masonry Association’s Award of Excellence, recognizing its excellence in design and execution.
