Samueli Academy Gymnasium

Objectives

The Samueli Academy board needed a durable and resilient product to build their new gymnasium. To achieve this, CMU was used to match the surrounding buildings on campus. The project also required double-wythe CMU walls to ensure the interior avoided exposure to outdoor elements.

Solutions

Adhering to outdoor elements and longevity was thoughtfully incorporated when selecting the right material. Tan uniformed blocks were selected to create a pristine backdrop so the school banners popped against them. The construction and manufacturing team worked closely to ensure the double exposed masonry was installed correctly so the inside CMU was well insulated and the exterior CMU was weatherproof.

Results

The project turned out beautifully! Samueli Academy Charter School completed the new gymnasium in March of 2022 and has become an incredible space for students to learn and gather for after-school activities. In the same year, the design team was also nominated for a Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada School Design Award for this project.
