Lawrence School District Bleacher Reconstruction

Objectives

Lawrence Kansas School District needed to replace bleachers at two high schools, but the timeline for getting aluminum bleachers would have prevented the district from completing the projects on time. Landplan Engineering of Lawrence investigated alternative materials to build bleachers. Capitol Concrete Products, a Lawrence manufacturer, learned about the project and contacted Landplan Engineering. After reviewing the benefits of SRW constructed bleachers, Landplan Engineering agreed that SRWs would be the best material for the projects.

Solutions

On each project site, terrace beams were built behind three of the four bleachers to support the structures from behind. A near-vertical wall was constructed behind the last bleacher section to support the structure. They added paving stones to build out the seating areas.

Results

The decision to move forward with a segmental retaining wall system structure over traditional aluminum bleachers saved the district $100 per seat and provided additional benefits. SRWs contained the stadium noise and kept attendees warm in the colder months because they could store and radiate heat from the sun. The team completed the project in time for the stadium to open at the start of the new school year and football season.
