Coolidge Avenue Office & Lab Facility

Objectives

The real estate developer wanted to create a multi-purpose office and research lab facility in Watertown, MA, and had specific objectives to create a functional and aesthetically appealing building while achieving LEED Gold Status. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, utilizing a framework for healthy, efficient, carbon, and cost-saving green buildings.

Solutions

To help achieve the LEED Gold status, Jandris Block worked closely with the project managers to ensure the selection of CarbonX Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) were incorporated. The CarbonX CMU has decreased cement used in production, allowing for increased atmospheric carbon sequestration. In addition, the carbon dioxide from ambient air reacts with the components of the CMU, sequestering it as calcium carbonate within the block, creating a carbon sink. The block selected helped achieve the company’s LEED Gold status but also paired well with the pavers used around the building and complimented the tranquil gardens and walkways that wind around the building.

Results

The new development is more energy efficient with the CarbonX CMUs. The result of this collaboration delivered a highly functional and visually appealing building suitable for the cutting-edge scientific research being conducted inside. This space is a perfect balance between the company’s commitment to environmental suitability and creating serene places for employees to take breaks throughout the day.
