Dante’s View

Objectives

About a half-million people visit Dante’s View in Death Valley National Park per year. After decades of use, the area became a hazard. It also did not have a railing or barrier, which was unsafe for visitors. The National Park Service wanted to rebuild the observation deck of Dante’s View to allow visitors to the area again.

Solutions

To stabilize the observation platform, the design team used an SRW system. The selected Mosaic SRWs had a weathered natural stone appearance that blended into the surrounding landscape. The system allowed installers to incorporate curves into the design without requiring special pieces to be manufactured.

Results

They installed the wall in a serpentine shape and included two overlooks that extend out over the hilltop. To protect visitors, they attached a thick cement cap and railing to the retaining wall. The new overlook ensures the safety of the millions of visitors who will come and witness the beauty of Dante’s Peak.
